What is an interlinear Bible?
An interlinear Bible places original-language information close to the translated text so readers can explore the words behind a passage.
The basic idea
Most readers use a translation. An interlinear tool helps show the Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek words connected to a verse, often with a gloss, lemma, morphology, and Strong's number.
Common terms
- Original word: the word as it appears in the biblical-language text.
- Lemma: the dictionary form of a word.
- Gloss: a short English sense, not a full translation.
- Strong's number: an index number used to look up related lexical information.
- Morphology: grammar details such as tense, voice, mood, case, number, and gender.
How to use it wisely
Interlinear data is helpful, but it should not be used to invent meanings that the passage does not support. The best use is careful: compare words, look at context, and check trusted resources before drawing conclusions.
