Who was Rahab? Jericho, the scarlet cord and faith

Rahab lived in Jericho and protected two Israelite spies. She asked for the safety of her household, agreed to a sign at her window and was brought out with her family when the city fell. Later biblical writers remember her faith and her place in the family line of Jesus.

Read Joshua before the later references

In Joshua 2:1–7, Rahab conceals the spies beneath flax on her roof. In 2:8–14, she describes what she has heard about Israel’s God and asks the visitors to spare her family. In 2:15–21, the escape, scarlet cord and conditions of the agreement are explained.

In Joshua 6:22–25, the spies bring Rahab and her household out. Notice how the rescue completes an agreement already made in chapter 2. The story is about a household as well as an individual.

What does the scarlet cord mean in the passage?

The cord identifies the house where Rahab’s family is gathered. That function is stated in Joshua 2. Christian readers have sometimes developed further symbolic interpretations, but those should be distinguished from what the narrative explicitly says. Begin with the sign, the promise and the household before adding later symbolism.

These passages use the same story for different purposes. Compare them in their surrounding arguments rather than treating them as interchangeable captions.
